Clinic by the Bay is the newest medical institution to become affiliated with the CPMC Ophthalmology Residency program. Since the summer of 2023, residents at the Lions Eye Clinic have treated patients with a variety of eye conditions ranging from retinopathy, glaucoma, and uveitis to cataracts.

The volunteer staff at Clinic by the Bay are retired physicians, nurses, educators and others who provide comprehensive primary care to the uninsured and underserved. According to CBTB Medical Director David Goldschmid, MD, “In the past, we were not rigorously looking for early eye conditions resulting from chronic illness, as we had no way to treat. That has changed now and we are starting to screen much more.”

The mission of the Clinic by the Bay is “to understand and serve, with dignity and respect, the health and wellness needs of the medically underserved in the San Francisco Bay Area.”
