Kevin Denny, MD – Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology
Dr. Kevin Denny was Chief of Cataract Surgery for 16 years prior to his appointment as Departmental Chair in 2015. He is a graduate of Harvard University and the New York University School of Medicine. He completed his Ophthalmology residency at CPMC. He practices at the Denny Eye and Laser Center located at the Eye Institute.

Gaurav Shah, MD, FASRS – Vice Chair
Dr. Shah was named Vice Chair in the summer of 2025.He practices with the West Coast Retina Medical Group. Dr Shah is a graduate of the University of Illinois College of Medicine. He served his residency at University of Minnesota, Department of Ophthalmology, and his Fellowship: Diseases and Surgery of the Retina and Vitreous, Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia, PA.

Michael Jumper, MD – Director of the Retina Fellowship
Dr. Michael Jumper has held the post of Chief of the Retina Service since 2007. He also served as Vice-Chair of the Department from 2014 to 2025. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, and completed his Ophthalmology residency at UCSF and a Retina fellowship at Duke University Eye Center. He practices at West Coast Retina in San Francisco.
Samuel Reiter, MD – CPMC Residency Program Director
Dr. Reiter was named CPMC Residency Program Director in the fall of 2023. He received his undergraduate degree from UCLA and his medical degree from the University of California, Davis Medical School. He is a graduate of the CPMC Ophthalmology residency. He practices in Marin and the East Bay and teaches in resident clinics including at Highland Hospital.

Kristina Austin, MD – Associate Program Director
Dr. Austin was named Associate Program Director in the winter of 2025. She practices at Highland Hospital and Kaiser, Fremont. She received her medical degree from Medical College of Wisconsin. Interned at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle and her ophthalmology residency at Stanford University Medical Center, Her career has spanned 30 years at TPMG at the GSAA(Greater Southern Alameda Area) facilities where she served as Department Chief of Ophthalmology She received the 2019 Cecil Cutting Leadership Award at TPMG and earned a Teaching Award in 2022 at Highland Hospital.
Andrew Calman, MD, PhD – Vice Chair of Faculty Development
Dr. Calman became Vice Chair of Faculty Development in the fall of 2024. He practices at Sutter, CPMC. He is a Past President of the California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons, and has been a Bay Area pioneer in advanced computerized diagnosis and minimally invasive laser and microsurgery for cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Dr. Calman completed his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Yale University with degrees in molecular biophysics and biochemistry, Summa Cum Laude. He then attended the UCSF School of Medicine, earning his M.D. and Ph.D. in Microbiology and Immunology (and winning the Dean’s Prize and Chancellor’s Fellowship), and served his residency at UCSF. Dr. Calman has served as a Medical Expert for the Medical Board of California, and is an Associate Examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology. He speaks nine languages, including Spanish and Tagalog.

Louisa Lu, MD – Director of Medical Student Education
Named Director of Medical Student Education in the fall of 2024, Dr. Lu is a graduate of the Yale School of Medicine and completed her residency at Stanford University Medical Center. She was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and spent a year at the Francis I. Proctor Foundation at the University of California San Francisco and Chiang Mai University in Thailand, conducting research on initiatives dedicated to the prevention of blindness internationally. She practices in Greenbrae and teaches at the Lions Eye Clinic.
