Introducing our new Barkan Society President, Charles Zacks, MD
In June 2021 at the annual Barkan Symposium, Dr. Charles Zacks was elected President of The Barkan Society by acclimation. Drs. Charlene Hsu-Winges and Ivan Schwab had previously served as co-chairs, helping to shape early discussions on the role of The Barkan Society website and organization. We are grateful for their service.
Dr. Zacks plans to retire from his active Cornea practice at the end of 2021, after thirty-one years at the Maine Eye Center in Portland, Maine. He is a graduate of Brown University and Yale Medical School, and completed his residency training at CPMC in 1988, with a brief tenure on the CPMC faculty before a fellowship in Cornea and External Diseases at Bascom Palmer.
He has served as a Clinical Instructor at Tufts University School of Medicine and is published on topics ranging from corneal physiology to medical ethics. He has held leadership positions in regional and national ophthalmologic organizations, including a term as a Trustee-at-Large on the Academy Board of Trustees, and has been recognized for his contributions to the Academy as a past Chair of the Ethics Committee and as the first Chair of the Webinar Planning Committee.
In his next chapter, Charles Zacks looks forward to retirement activities including continued study of classical violin, and in service to the Barkan Society. Please feel free to contact him using the form on this page with your ideas about how the Barkan Society might help you connect with your CPMC colleagues, or otherwise enhance your professional experience in ophthalmology.
