Welcome to this story of our unique 150-year-old Ophthalmology Residency program which is accredited to California Pacific Medical Center and headquartered at the Pacific Vision Eye Institute in San Francisco. The Barkan Society celebrates the close collegial relationships of residents, fellows, full-time and volunteer faculty which is a signature of the residency program.
The unique and inspirational atmosphere which exists at CPMC is conducive to an incredibly positive and optimistic outlook, allowing young physicians to imagine what is possible in their careers. Residents and fellows receive a top-notch clinical education focused on patient ownership, responsibility and a can-do attitude.
The Barkan name in ophthalmology dates to the 1870’s, when Dr. Adolf Barkan became the first Ophthalmology Chair in the west. Later his son Dr. Hans Barkan was named Chairman of the department in 1912. At the Barkan Society’s yearly meeting residents present the findings of their original research.
