Mustafa Safi graduated with honors in biochemistry from the California State University, Sacramento and received his medical degree from the University of California, Davis, School of Medicine. He went on to complete his internship at Highland Hospital in Oakland. Mustafa’s interest and passion for becoming an ophthalmologist stems from his experiences growing up in a medically underserved community where he witnessed the difficulty residents encountered accessing healthcare services.
Before starting his ophthalmology training, Mustafa completed a clinical research fellowship at the Smith-Kettlewell Eye Research Institute. There he evaluated the relationship between accommodation and strabismus, in addition to researching the effects of macular degeneration on smooth pursuit. He is excited to train at CPMC because of the patient population served, excellent surgical training, and invested faculty.
During his free time, he actively engages in community outreach and mentoring students who are pursuing the medical field. He enjoys weightlifting, playing basketball, listening to smooth jazz and neo-soul, hiking, and most importantly, spending time with family.
