Fundraising is underway to establish the Center for Microsurgical Innovation and Education (CMIE) located in the heart of Pacific Vision Eye Institute, adjacent to the CPMC Ophthalmology offices, CPMC/Lions Eye Clinic and Education center where residents and fellows will acquire the fundamentals of microsurgery, advanced cataract surgery techniques and complication management and subspeciality surgical techniques for Retina, Corneas, Ocular Plastics, Glaucoma and Pediatrics.

Our primary goal is to create a state-of-the-art learning environment that strengthens students’ knowledge and essential surgical skills. Through simulators and video review, students will develop core competencies while faculty provide targeted feedback and instruction tailored to each learner’s pace and needs. This approach reduces errors, builds confidence, and enhances the learning experience for both students and faculty.

Four workstations with microscopes and real-time video monitoring, will enable students to recognize subtle intraocular changes and refine their decision-making. This laboratory setup will help each resident build technical mastery while meeting and exceeding standards for preparedness and patient safety. A video camera mounted above and behind each microscope will display high-resolution, full-color images, allowing the supervising surgeon to closely observe the microsurgical work while recording the operation for review and discussion.

Sophisticated Simulators will enhance surgical and diagnostic training

The Eyesi surgical simulator will teach core microsurgical principles, cataract surgery from basic to advanced techniques, management of cataract complications, and the fundamentals of vitreoretinal surgery. Its benefits will extend to junior residents, retina fellows, and practicing ophthalmologists participating in skill-enhancement courses.

The Eyesi Slit Lamp Simulator will teach SLT laser treatment, capsulotomy and peripheral iridotomy procedures, as well as anterior segment, gonioscopy, and posterior segment examinations. This equipment will directly benefit medical students, residents, and emergency medicine residents.

The Eyesi Indirect Ophthalmoscope Simulator teaches the fundamentals of a comprehensive fundoscopic examination using an indirect ophthalmoscope resulting in a dynamic visualization of the peripheral retina in all quadrants, recognition of common and complex ocular pathology patterns and critical thinking in challenging clinical scenarios. It will be especially valuable for medical students and junior residents.

To further strengthen the department’s long-standing commitment to pediatric ophthalmology, an Eyesi ROP Simulator is on the wish list. This equipment can teach the fundamentals of newborn fundoscopic examination, scleral indentation, dynamic peripheral viewing in all quadrants, ROP pattern recognition and grading, and laser treatment of ROP. Through simulation it offers the safe opportunity to build a skilled work force, well versed in clinical diagnosis and would establish the only training facility on the West Coast with this advanced capability.
